Overcoming My English Speaking Challenges with Herbal Tea
Join me as I share my experiences with the AI conversation app Speak and my love for herbal tea.
Struggling with AI Conversations
Tonight, I found myself grappling with the AI English conversation app Speak once more. My previous discussion revolved around the topic of shopping for autumn attire. When the AI prompted me with, "Shopping can be exhausting, right? How do you unwind after a shopping spree?" I mentioned, somewhat casually, that I enjoy drinking herbal tea. This detail resonated strongly with the AI.
Finding Comfort in Chamomile
My spontaneous reply was, "Yes, I love chamomile tea. However, I recently discovered a delightful tea shop that offers various types of herbal teas, so I'm exploring some new flavors these days." To my surprise, I was quickly corrected about my phrasing.
It’s supposed to be "a lot of kinds of herbal tea," not "a lot of kind of herbal teas."
This correction caught me off guard. How could I have mixed up such a simple phrase? Though I often produce polished writing, I stumbled into speech errors I didn't expect.
The Misunderstood Go-To
When the AI asked me if I had a “go-to tea,” I boldly replied, “Of course,” even though I wasn't fully sure what that meant. The phrase “to make A your go-to B” suggests that A is your preferred choice for B.
The wonderful thing about using the Speak AI is that it is programmed to clarify meanings or adjust questions for better understanding. This feature greatly assists my learning.
Tea Pairings and Relaxation
Continuing the discussion, I tried to explain my evening routine. I stated, “At night, I usually just, uh, enjoy itself,” but my grammar was clearly off. The correct phrasing should have been “enjoy it by itself.”
Similarly, I remarked on my tea-drinking habits, saying, “When I drink tea in the morning or in daytime, I sometimes pair them with some sweets.” Here I failed again—“during the day” flows better than “in daytime,” and I had mistakenly used “they” instead of “it” to refer back to the tea.
Progress Amidst Mistakes
Despite these missteps, I’ve started to feel more at ease during my ten minutes of conversation practice. Recently, I brought up the tea shop, known for its assorted caffeine-free varieties, which even allows sampling. I highly recommend checking it out if you're a fellow herbal tea enthusiast!
While perfection is the goal, I embrace the learning process and look forward to my next session with Speak, armed with my favorite herbal brews.
